The part that is easy to miss

Your air conditioner may be fighting heat from above.

Sunlight heats the roof deck. In a vented attic with weak air movement, heat can accumulate and surround attic ductwork and equipment — and the ceiling below sits under all of it.

That does not make ventilation the only fix. Air sealing, insulation, duct condition, and HVAC performance all matter too. But it does make attic airflow worth looking at — and it tends to be the one people get to last.

Small openings around lights, wiring, plumbing and attic access can let conditioned air escape into the attic. Sealing these gaps can help keep the air you have already paid to cool where it belongs.

Insulation slows heat transfer between your attic and the rooms below. Thin spots, gaps or uneven coverage can make it harder for your home to stay comfortable, even when you have plenty of insulation overall.

If your HVAC equipment or ductwork runs through the attic, trapped heat can make an already demanding job even harder. Leaky or poorly insulated ducts can add to the problem.

A vented attic needs a way for outside air to enter low and hot, humid air to escape above. Good intake and exhaust work together to keep air moving through the attic.

Intake vents low on the roof — usually at the eaves or soffits — let outside air into the attic. Without clear intake an exhaust fan has very little to pull from, which is why the two are always specified together.

The panel on the unit runs the fan directly from sunlight, so no household electricity is needed for standard daytime operation and there is nothing to wire back to your panel. The brighter the afternoon, the harder it tends to work.

Warm air collects at the top of the attic and the fan moves it out through the roof. Keeping that air moving is what stops heat and humidity from sitting above your ceiling all afternoon.

A cooler attic means less heat pressing down on the ceiling and on any ductwork running through it, which can ease the load on your HVAC. How much it helps depends on your insulation, air sealing and duct condition — the other three things on the first tab.

What homeowners ask us first.

Will this cool my whole house?

No. Attic Breeze ventilates the attic; it is not an air conditioner. A cooler attic may help reduce the heat load on the rooms below, but every home responds differently based on insulation, air sealing, ductwork, HVAC, roof design and weather.

Energy savings vary from home to home. Climate, attic conditions, HVAC performance, insulation, thermostat settings and local energy rates all play a role, so we do not promise a specific percentage.

Often, yes — if they provide enough clear net free intake area and are not blocked. Painted-over or insulation-blocked soffits deliver a fraction of their rating. Intake has to be assessed for the specific fan and attic before anything goes on the roof.

They may remain part of the system. But fan placement and nearby exhaust openings have to be evaluated so the fan does not pull replacement air back down through the ridge instead of up from the eaves. That short-circuit leaves part of the attic under-ventilated.

Stop here. Do not assume an active attic fan is appropriate for a sealed or conditioned attic — it is designed to work differently. Ask an HVAC or building-science professional to evaluate the assembly first.

No grid electricity is required for standard daytime operation. The unit runs off its own photovoltaic panel — no circuit, no junction box, no electrician. Optional control features should be confirmed separately for the model you choose.
